Photographer: Chris Buck
This is a somewhat peculiar shot which makes for a very interesting composition. The subject is in profile which isn’t common but still an excellent choice by Chris because Jay Leno has an oddly shaped face. To make sure the photograph had full impact he used carefully placed lighting and a dark background to ensure there were no other distractions and the shape of Jay’s face truly stood out. Lastly, keeping the rule of thirds in mind, Chris placed Jay on the left side of the frame which made the photograph ultimately appealing.
Photographer: Ira Cohen
This image evokes many emotions which Ira Cohen has artfully achieved with thoughtful composition in what appears to be a candid shot. The lack of colour and natural, yet very convenient lighting thoroughly bring out the texture in the image. Additionally, Ira cleverly used the rule of thirds coupled along with selective focus to draw your eyes to the little boy’s face and then down to his hand holding the cigarette.
Photographer: Damir Sagolj
This is a very strong portrait mainly due to its graphic nature. Damir captured the image of the man in sharp focus, in the center of the frame. Additionally, the two identical guns he’s toting give the photograph great symmetrical balance, which is always appealing. It’s an absolutely striking image that’s remarkable considering its simplicity.
